In 1663, Shivaji Maharaj captured both Salher and Mulher forts from the Mughals to strengthen his rule in the Baglan province. After the famous Surat campaign in 1670, Maharaj returned through this region, carrying the loot to Ramgad. The Mughals, determined to reclaim their lost territory, sent a massive army of ten thousand cavalry under Ikhlam Khan and Bahlol Khan. In response, Maharaj dispatched his brave commanders Sarsenapati Prataprao Gujar and Moropant Pingle to defend the forts.
The fierce battle that followed at the foot of Salher Fort was one of the bloodiest in Maratha history. Elephants, horses, infantry, and cannons thundered across the battlefield. The Marathas emerged victorious, though they mourned the loss of the courageous Suryabhan Kakade, one of Shivaji Maharaj’s trusted chiefs. Later, during the 18th century, the fort came under the Peshwas and was known as Peshgad, before eventually being taken over by the British. Even today, visitors can see the ancient footprints of horses at the base of the fort — silent witnesses to the valor and sacrifice of the Maratha warriors.
